Resolution in Support of STEM Education Initiative

WHEREAS, the foundation of America's leadership in the 21st century in a knowledge based, innovation-driven, global economy is built upon a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) literate workforce; and

WHEREAS, the U.S has one of the lowest rates of STEM degree production in an international comparison; the international average is 26.4% of all degrees; the US rate is 16.8%; and

WHEREAS, the number of STEM-qualified, new entrants into the advanced technology workforce is projected to be insufficient to fill the workforce pipeline; and

WHEREAS, scientific literacy is also the foundation of being a good citizen; and

WHEREAS, numerous states have encouraged math and science education, including engineering and technology education through Acts of their General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, raising achievement in STEM subjects from preschool through higher education opens doors to STEM-related careers and strengthens the workforce of a state; and

WHEREAS, an emphasis on reaching out to minority, low-income and other underrepresented students to encourage interest in STEM is vital; and

WHEREAS, innovative STEM research at colleges and universities and by private business and industry is key to creating jobs for a more vibrant economy; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the National Foundation for Women Legislators' (NFWL) National Policy Committee on Business, Housing & Economic Development encourages every state to declare that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education should be strengthened as part of providing a world-class education for every student, encouraging innovation, and enhancing economic development; and now

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this NFWL Committee encourages every state to establish and support a collaborative vision to promote STEM education.
